Indices: (all are normalized to range between 0 and 1, with 1 the default highest value, hence the metrics are comparable)

Caliber = A weighted average of publication scores of authors who have published in the journal. See the econphd.net ranking pages on how the publication score is constructed. An author's weight is his/her number of "page shares" (pages published in the journal divided by the number of joint authors of a given article). Hence the competition index measures the average "caliber" of contributors to the journal - or, the most likely caliber of an author who directly competes against a randomly chosen submission.

Tenure = Compares the fraction of articles written by frequent authors (who have three or more publications in the journal) with that written by infrequent authors (who have only one publication in the journal throughout the period). The number, before normalization, is 1 plus the "frequent" fraction less the "infrequent" fraction, which may range from 0 to 2. After normalization, a value near 1 means there is an established pool of contributors that tends to dominate the journal; a value near zero suggests that the journal is accessible to authors with shorter or no track records.

Focus = Measures the cumulative difference between the journal's stakes in subdisciplines and the shares of subdisciplines in the entire database. E.g. if 3% of a journal's pages are dedicated to game theory, and 4% of all pages in the database are from articles in game theory, then the difference is .01. The actual index is the square root of the sum of squared differences in all (minor) subdisciplines (i.e. 1.1, 1.2 etc. - see the ranking pages). A number close to zero characterizes a generalist journal, whereas high values indicate specialization in a small subset of fields.
